Hiver in Nahuel Huapi National Park

Nahuel Huapi, Argentina's oldest national park established in 1934, encompasses over 700,000 hectares of Andean lakes, forests, and mountains centered on the city of San Carlos de Bariloche. In winter, de juin à août, this vast park transforms into the epicenter of South American winter sports and snow tourism.

The park's crown jewel in winter is undoubtedly Cerro Catedral, South America's largest and most developed station de ski. With over 120km of groomed runs, 38 lifts, and a vertical drop of nearly 1,100 meters, Catedral draws skiers and snowboarders from across the continent and beyond. But the park offers far more than just skiing — the snow-covered Circuito Chico scenic drive, frozen lake viewpoints, winter forest walks, and Bariloche's legendary chocolate and bière artisanale scene create a complete winter destination.

Bariloche itself serves as the park's urban heart, offering the most developed tourist infrastructure in Patagonia. Hotels, restaurants, rental car agencies, outdoor gear shops, and cultural attractions operate at full capacity throughout winter. The city's chocolate shops — over 100 of them — are an integral part of the winter experience, as are its dozens of craft breweries and fine dining restaurants. A rental car opens up the park's scenic drives and multiple access points, allowing visitors to combine skiing with broader exploration of this stunning winter landscape.
