Automne in Lanín National Park

Lanín National Park, covering over 412,000 hectares in Neuquén Province, Argentina, is dominated by its namesake volcano — the 3,776-meter Volcán Lanín, whose symmetrical cone is one of Patagonia's most iconic landmarks. En automne, from mars through mai, the park puts on one of the Southern Hemisphere's greatest natural displays.

The park protects a remarkable diversity of forest types, from the ancient araucaria (monkey puzzle) forests in the north to dense Valdivian temperate rainforest in the south. En automne, the deciduous species — lenga, ñire, and raulí — transform into a spectacular palette of crimson, gold, amber, and copper. The araucarias, unchanged since the age of dinosaurs, maintain their prehistoric silhouettes against the colorful backdrop, while the turquoise glacial lakes reflect it all.

Lago Huechulafquen, the park's largest lake, is the centerpiece of l'automne experience. Stretching toward Volcán Lanín with forests cascading down its shores, the lake offers viewpoints that rank among the most beautiful in all of Patagonia. En automne, with fresh snow on the volcano's upper slopes and fire-colored forests below, the scene is breathtaking.

The park is also culturally rich, with several Mapuche communities maintaining their traditional ways of life within and adjacent to the park boundaries. Automne is a meaningful time in the Mapuche calendar, approaching the We Tripantu (Mapuche New Year) celebrated at the winter solstice in juin.

Accessed from the towns of San Martín de los Andes and Junín de los Andes, the park offers extensive hiking trails, fishing rivers, and scenic drives that are all enhanced by l'automne transformation. Services remain available through mars and avril, with a graceful wind-down in mai.
