Été in Villarrica

Villarrica is a lakeside town of about 55,000 on the southwestern shore of Lago Villarrica in Chile's Araucanía region. While its neighbor Pucón (25km east) gets most of the tourist attention, Villarrica has its own considerable appeal — a more authentic Chilean town with a strong Mapuche cultural presence, excellent lakeside beaches, volcanic views, and a growing gastronomy scene.

Été from décembre à février brings Villarrica's best weather. Temperatures reach 26-30°C — some of the warmest in the Lake District — and the lake warms to genuinely comfortable baignade temperatures. The black-sand beaches along the waterfront fill with Chilean families, kayakers paddle the calm morning waters, and the perfectly conical Volcán Villarrica (2,847m) smokes gently on the eastern horizon.

What distinguishes Villarrica from other Lake District towns is its Mapuche heritage. The town sits in the heart of traditional Mapuche territory, and indigenous culture is woven into daily life — from the Mapuche Cultural Museum to artisan markets selling traditional silver jewelry and textiles, to communities in the surrounding countryside that welcome visitors for cultural experiences.

The town also offers something Pucón doesn't — a waterfront that faces the open lake with spectacular sunset views over the water. The costanera (lakefront promenade) is the social heart of été Villarrica, with cafés, ice cream shops, and artisan stands creating a relaxed vacation atmosphere.

A voiture de location from Temuco airport (1.5 hours) or from Villarrica itself provides access to both towns, the volcan, sources chaudes, and the broader Lake District.
