6-Day Hot Springs Road Trip

Arrive at Temuco Airport (ZCO) and drive 110 km south to Pucón, the adventure capital of Chile's Lake District. Check into your accommodation with views of the perfectly conical Villarrica Volcano. In the afternoon, drive to Termas Geométricas, widely regarded as the most beautiful hot springs complex in Chile. Seventeen slate-lined pools are connected by a striking red boardwalk that winds through a narrow, fern-draped canyon. The water temperatures range from pleasantly warm to intensely hot, and the steam rising through the forest creates a dreamlike atmosphere. Soak until dusk and return to Pucón for dinner.

Explore more of the area's thermal wealth. In the morning, visit Termas Los Pozones, a rustic and beloved hot springs where stone-lined pools sit right beside a rushing mountain river. The contrast of plunging from hot pools into the cold river is exhilarating. After lunch, drive to Termas de Huife for a more developed experience with indoor and outdoor pools, hydrotherapy circuits, and massage services. End the day with a drive along the scenic shore of Lago Villarrica to the town of Villarrica, stopping at viewpoints where the volcano and lake create perfect reflections.

Begin the journey south toward the Carretera Austral. Drive from Pucón to Puerto Montt (330 km, about 4 hours on the Pan-American Highway), passing through the agricultural heartland of southern Chile with volcano views throughout. From Puerto Montt, board the ferry to Chaitén for the scenic crossing through Chilean fjords and channels. The 10-hour overnight ferry is an experience in itself, sailing past forested islands, waterfalls, and possibly dolphins. Alternatively, drive to Chiloé and take the shorter 5-hour ferry from Quellón. Arrive in Chaitén late evening.

Explore the hot springs near Chaitén. Drive south to Termas El Amarillo, a simple but beautiful thermal complex beside the Michinmahuida River, with pools set in lush temperate rainforest. The mineral-rich waters are wonderfully soothing after the ferry journey. In the afternoon, visit Pumalín Douglas Tompkins National Park and hike the Sendero Los Alerces through a grove of ancient alerce trees, some over 3,000 years old. The combination of primordial forest and geothermal springs creates a profound sense of connection with the Earth's deep forces.

Drive south on the Carretera Austral from Chaitén to Puyuhuapi, one of the most scenic stretches of the entire route. The road winds through dense valdivian rainforest, past waterfalls cascading from moss-covered cliffs, and along the deep blue Puyuhuapi Fjord. Stop at Queulat National Park to hike to the Ventisquero Colgante (Hanging Glacier), a surreal glacier suspended between peaks with twin waterfalls pouring from its face. Arrive in the charming village of Puyuhuapi, founded by German settlers, and end your day at the crown jewel: Termas de Puyuhuapi. These hot springs are accessed by boat across the fjord, with pools overlooking the water and surrounded by temperate rainforest.

Begin the drive north back toward Chaitén for your return ferry. The Carretera Austral looks completely different in the opposite direction, with new viewpoints and light angles revealing details you missed on the way south. Stop at any hot springs or viewpoints you want to revisit. Catch the ferry from Chaitén back to Puerto Montt or Chiloé, then drive to Puerto Montt Airport (PMC) to return your rental car and catch your flight. You leave Chile having soaked in some of the most extraordinary natural hot springs on the planet, carrying the warmth of the Earth itself.
