Été in Nahuel Huapi National Park

Nahuel Huapi Parc National is Argentina's oldest and most visited parc national, established in 1934 and encompassing 710,000 hectares of Andean lakes, forests, glaciers, and peaks surrounding the city of San Carlos de Bariloche. The park's centerpiece is the vast Lago Nahuel Huapi, a glacial lake of extraordinary blue surrounded by snow-capped mountains and dense lenga and coihue forests.

Été from décembre à février is the park's prime season. All randonnée trails are open, mountain refugios welcome trekkers, lakes warm enough for baignade, and the iconic scenic drives are at their most beautiful. With temperatures reaching 22-26°C, daylight lasting past 10pm, and the Andes gleaming under clear skies, this is when the park reveals its full grandeur.

The park offers an extraordinary range of experiences. The Refugio Frey circuit is one of Patagonia's classic hikes, reaching a granite amphitheater with a mountain lake. The Circuito Chico scenic drive loops through lakeside forests with stunning viewpoints. Isla Victoria, accessible by boat, features ancient arrayán (myrtle) forests with cinnamon-colored bark. The Tronador glacier, at the park's western edge, calves dramatically into an emerald lake.

Bariloche sits at the heart of the park, providing excellent infrastructure for visitors — from world-class chocolate shops and craft breweries to mountaineering gear shops and tour agencies. However, the park extends far beyond Bariloche in every direction, and a voiture de location is the key to unlocking its full potential, from the Seven Lakes Route heading north to the wild Paso de los Nubes trek in the south.

Été is the saison la plus sèche with about 30-50mm per month. Brief afternoon thunderstorms are possible. The western areas near the Chilean border receive more rain than the eastern steppe-transition zones.

Moderate to strong winds are common, particularly on lake surfaces and exposed ridges. Valleys and forests provide shelter. Afternoon winds tend to be strongest.

One of Patagonia's classic hikes — a 10km trail from the base of Cerro Catedral to a granite amphitheater surrounding Laguna Toncek. Many hikers overnight at the refugio. Été is the prime season with snow-free trails.

Circuito Chico Scenic Drive

This iconic 60km loop from Bariloche passes through lakeside forests, over Peninsula Llao Llao, and past numerous viewpoints. With a voiture de location, you can stop at beaches, trailheads, and the famous Llao Llao hotel for afternoon tea.

Isla Victoria and Arrayán Forest

A boat excursion from Puerto Pañuelo crosses Lago Nahuel Huapi to Isla Victoria and the Bosque de Arrayanes — a unique forest of cinnamon-barked myrtle trees that allegedly inspired Disney's Bambi.

Cerro Tronador Glacier

Drive to the base of Monte Tronador (3,478m) — the park's highest peak — to see the Ventisquero Negro (Black Glacier) and hear the thunderous ice collapses that give the mountain its name. A full-day excursion.

Lake Swimming and Beaches

Été warms the smaller lakes and bays enough for baignade. Playa Bonita, Bahía Serena, and Lago Gutiérrez are popular spots. The water is refreshing rather than warm.

Seven Lakes Route

Drive the famous Ruta de los Siete Lagos connecting Bariloche to San Martín de los Andes. This 110km route passes seven lakes of different colors, with numerous stops for photos, short hikes, and lakeside picnics.

For quieter experiences, start hikes early, visit less-known trails, or explore the park's southern and western sectors. December and February are slightly calmer.
