Hiver in Marble Caves

Découvrez les activités, événements et expériences à Marble Caves en hiver — aventures en plein air et culture.

5 min de lecture

The Marble Caves (Capillas de Mármol) are one of Patagonia's most iconic natural wonders — cathedral-like caves carved by centuries of wave action into pure marble peninsula jutting into Lago General Carrera. In summer, small boats from the village of Puerto Tranquilo navigate into the caves, revealing swirling blue and grey marble walls reflected in turquoise water. It is a breathtaking experience.

However, winter de juin à août is not the time to have this experience. All boat tours to the Marble Caves are suspended during winter. The lake's waters are too rough, the weather too unpredictable, and no operators maintain winter services. This is an important fact for trip planning — if seeing the caves is your primary goal, visit between novembre and mars.

That said, the area around the Marble Caves has its own winter appeal. Puerto Tranquilo, the tiny village that serves as the launch point for cave tours, sits on a dramatic stretch of the Carretera Austral where the road follows the lake's western shore. In winter, this landscape is stark and powerful — turquoise water clashing with grey skies, snow covering the mountains to the shoreline, and the wind creating spray and waves that hint at the forces that carved the caves over millennia. For Carretera Austral winter travelers passing through, Puerto Tranquilo serves as a rest stop with basic services in an otherwise remote stretch.

Precipitations

Heavy on the western shore, averaging 120-200mm par mois. Falls as rain, sleet, and snow. Extended periods of overcast, wet weather are common.

Vent

Strong to severe, especially on the exposed lakeshore. The lake's massive surface generates powerful wind and wave action.

Ensoleillement

Environ 8-9 heures de lumière du jour. Overcast conditions frequently reduce effective light.

Winter at the Marble Caves area is cold, wet, and windy. The western shore of Lago General Carrera catches Pacific moisture, making this one of the wetter winter spots on the Carretera Austral. Storms produce dramatic lake conditions with large waves. Clear spells between fronts offer glimpses of the surrounding beauty but are brief.
