Été in Tolhuin

Tolhuin calls itself the "Heart of Tierra del Fuego" — and geographically, it earns the title. This small town of about 10,000 sits on the eastern shore of Lago Fagnano (also called Lago Khami), the largest lake on the island, roughly midway between Ushuaia and Río Grande on Ruta 3. What puts Tolhuin on the map for most travelers is one building: Panadería La Unión, a legendary bakery where every traveler on Ruta 3 stops for facturas (Argentine pastries), empanadas, and coffee.

But Tolhuin deserves more than a bakery stop. Été from décembre à février reveals a charming lakeside community surrounded by Fuegian beech forests and backed by the tail end of the Andes. Lago Fagnano stretches 100km to the west, its wind-whipped waters and forested shores providing a dramatic setting for pêche, kayak, and lakeside walks. The surrounding forests offer randonnée through pristine sub-Antarctic woodland where beavers (an introduced and invasive species) have created extensive dam networks.

The town has a frontier character — simple wooden buildings, a few basic restaurants, and a community of people who've chosen to live at the edge of the inhabited world. The warmth of Patagonian hospitality is genuine here, and the absence of tourist infrastructure is part of the appeal.

Tolhuin is best experienced as part of a Tierra del Fuego driving itinerary. The road from Ushuaia crosses the dramatic Paso Garibaldi before descending to the lake, and continuing north to Río Grande reveals the island's transition from mountain forest to open steppe.
