Villarrica, a charming lakeside town in Chile's Araucanía Region, sits on the western shore of the lake that shares its name, overlooked by the perfectly conical and perpetually smoking Volcán Villarrica (2,847m). Together with its neighbor Pucón on the lake's eastern shore, the area forms one of Chile's premier outdoor destinations.

Autumn, from marzo through mayo, brings what many consider the region's most beautiful season. The native forests of lenga, ñire, roble, and raulí that carpet the mountains and lakeshores undergo a spectacular color transformation — turning shades of crimson, copper, gold, and amber. The ever-present volcano, often dusted with fresh otoño snow, provides a dramatic focal point above the colored canopy.

Villarrica has a deeper cultural identity than tourist-focused Pucón. The town's Mapuche heritage is visible in its crafts market, cultural center, and surrounding communities. Otoño brings the town closer to its indigenous roots as the tourist season winds down and the Mapuche calendar moves toward We Tripantu (New Year) in junio. Cultural visits to Mapuche communities — for traditional food, weaving demonstrations, and storytelling — are especially meaningful in this reflective season.

The region's numerous termas are at their most appealing en otoño's cooler weather. Soaking in steaming piscinas termales surrounded by colored forest while the volcano smokes overhead is one of Chile's great travel experiences. Major termas complexes like Termas Geométricas, Huife, and Menetué all operate through otoño.

marzo offers the warmest weather with most summer services still running. abril brings peak foliage and a wonderful shoulder-season atmosphere. By mayo, the town grows quiet as winter approaches, but the termas, Mapuche culture, and volcanic scenery remain compelling.
