Chile's Lake District sits atop one of the most active volcanic zones on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where snow-capped volcanoes tower over emerald lakes and dense araucaria forests. Beneath this dramatic landscape lies an underground network of geothermal activity that surfaces in dozens of natural hot springs, from rustic forest pools to architecturally stunning thermal complexes. This 12-day circuit connects the best volcanoes and hot springs from the Araucanía region south to the Carretera Austral.

The route begins in Temuco and winds through Pucón, the adventure capital of Chile, past the Villarrica and Osorno volcanoes, through the charming lakeside towns of Puerto Varas and Puerto Montt, and then south along the Carretera Austral to Chaitén and Futaleufú. The driving ranges from excellent paved highways to exciting gravel roads, making a sturdy rental car essential. Every day offers a new thermal experience, a new volcanic vista, and a deeper appreciation for the raw geological forces shaping this extraordinary landscape.

20 minutes

Arrive at Temuco Airport (ZCO) and pick up your rental car. Temuco is the gateway to the Chilean Lake District and the cultural capital of the Mapuche people, Chile's largest indigenous group. Explore the Mercado Municipal, a vibrant market filled with Mapuche crafts, local produce, and traditional food stalls. Visit the Museo Regional de la Araucanía for insights into the region's rich indigenous heritage. Drive through the agricultural Araucanía countryside on the outskirts, where fertile volcanic soil supports farms and forests.

Día 2

Temuco to Pucón

110 km
1.5 hours

Drive south to Pucón, Chile's undisputed adventure capital, nestled on the shores of Lago Villarrica beneath the perfectly conical Villarrica Volcano. The 110 km drive passes through rolling countryside with increasingly dramatic views of the volcano ahead. Arrive in Pucón and check into your accommodation. In the afternoon, visit the Termas Geométricas, an architectural masterpiece of 17 hot spring pools connected by a winding red boardwalk through a narrow forest canyon. Soaking in the steaming pools while surrounded by temperate rainforest is a magical introduction to Chile's geothermal wealth.

Villarrica Volcano Ascent

30 km (to trailhead and back)
30 minutes

Today is the trip's big adventure: summiting Villarrica Volcano (2,847m), one of the most active volcanoes in South America. The guided climb begins predawn and takes 5-6 hours to reach the summit, where you peer into the steaming, lava-glowing crater — an extraordinary experience. The descent is famously fun, sliding down snow slopes on your backside. This climb requires a certified guide and full equipment (provided). If the volcano is closed due to activity or weather, alternative hikes in Villarrica National Park offer excellent forest and volcano views. Rest and celebrate in the evening.

Pernoctar: Pucón💡 Book your Villarrica ascent with a reputable guide company well in advance. Physical fitness is important — the climb involves 6+ hours of steep uphill on snow. The volcano closes frequently due to volcanic activity, so have a backup plan.

Pucón to Villarrica & Termas

60 km (round trip)

Enjoy a more relaxed day exploring the area around Lago Villarrica. Drive to the town of Villarrica on the western shore of the lake, a quieter alternative to Pucón with a lovely waterfront and excellent Mapuche cultural museum. In the afternoon, visit one of the area's many hot springs. Termas de Huife and Termas Los Pozones are popular options, each offering a different experience — Huife is more developed while Los Pozones is rustic, with stone pools beside a rushing river. The combination of a hot thermal soak after yesterday's volcano climb is therapeutic perfection.

Stop at the lakeside town of Frutillar, a charming settlement of German colonial heritage with a stunning lake and volcano backdrop. Visit the Teatro del Lago concert hall and walk the German-style waterfront before continuing to Osorno.

Puerto Varas to Chaitén (Ferry or Drive)

90 km (to Puerto Montt ferry terminal)
1 hour driving + 5-10 hours ferry

Begin your journey into the Carretera Austral. Two options: take the ferry from Puerto Montt to Chaitén (10 hours, scenic fjord sailing), or drive via Chiloé and take a shorter ferry from Quellón to Chaitén (5 hours). Both are memorable. The ferry route through the Chilean fjords is spectacular, passing islands, waterfalls, and dolphin-frequented channels. Arrive in Chaitén and explore this small town that was rebuilt after the 2008 volcanic eruption. The ghost town section, where buildings remain buried under ash, is a sobering reminder of volcanic power.

Chaitén to Futaleufú

The road is a mix of paved and gravel, crossing several bridges over rushing tributaries. Futaleufú sits in a dramatic river valley surrounded by snow-capped peaks, and the town has a relaxed, adventurous atmosphere. Check in and explore the riverside area, taking in the stunning color of the Futaleufú River — often described as the most beautiful river in the world.

Choose from half-day or full-day rafting trips ranging from Class III (intermediate) to Class V (expert). The river's power combined with the pristine mountain scenery makes for an unforgettable adrenaline rush. If whitewater is not your style, excellent alternatives include horseback riding through the valley, fly fishing in the calmer sections, or hiking to panoramic viewpoints above the river. End the day with a well-earned dinner at a local restaurant.

Continue to Chaitén and spend the afternoon visiting Pumalín Douglas Tompkins National Park, one of Chile's most important conservation areas. Hike the Sendero Alerces trail through ancient alerce trees (some over 3,000 years old) or the Cascadas trail to beautiful waterfall viewpoints. This is rewilded Patagonia at its finest.

90 km (from ferry terminal to airport)
1 hour + 5-10 hours ferry

The fjord crossing offers one final stunning panorama of southern Chile's coastline, islands, and volcanoes. Upon reaching the mainland, drive to Puerto Montt Airport (PMC) to return your rental car and catch your departure flight. Preguntas Frecuentes

Can I climb Villarrica Volcano without experience?

Yes, with a certified guide. Reasonable physical fitness is required (the climb takes 5-6 hours uphill), but no technical mountaineering experience is needed. Guides provide all equipment including crampons, ice axes, and helmets.

Which hot springs are the best?

Termas Geométricas near Pucón is the most spectacular architecturally. Los Pozones is the most atmospheric (rustic riverside pools). Termas de Puyehue near Osorno offers the most luxurious facilities. Each has its own charm.

Do I need to book ferries in advance?

Yes, especially in peak season (January-February). Naviera Austral ferries between Puerto Montt/Chiloé and Chaitén sell out quickly. Book as soon as your dates are confirmed.

Is the Carretera Austral section difficult to drive?

The Chaitén-Futaleufú section is manageable for confident drivers in an SUV. The gravel road has steep sections and blind curves but is well-maintained. Drive cautiously, honk before curves, and maintain moderate speeds.

What if Villarrica Volcano is closed?

Villarrica closes frequently due to volcanic activity or weather. Excellent alternatives include hiking in Villarrica National Park, the Huerquehue National Park trail to high-altitude lakes, or a full day at various hot springs.

Can I do this trip in reverse?

Absolutely. Starting from Chaitén/Futaleufú and driving north to Temuco works equally well. PatagoniaHub can arrange one-way rentals between Puerto Montt and Temuco airports.
