Summer in Valdivia

Valdivia is Chile's most enchanting river city — a place where the Calle-Calle, Cruces, and Valdivia rivers converge before flowing to the Pacific through a system of wetlands and islands. With about 170,000 inhabitants, it combines a vibrant university atmosphere, strong German-Chilean heritage, a world-class craft beer scene, and a natural setting where sea lions lounge at the fish market and black-necked swans glide past historic buildings.

Summer from December through February transforms Valdivia from its famously rainy self into a warm, predominantly sunny city. Temperatures reach 24-28°C, and the rivers and riverfront promenades come alive with boat tours, outdoor cafés, and the constant activity of the famous Mercado Fluvial (river market) where sea lions beg for scraps below vendors selling fresh fish.

The city's German heritage — a legacy of mid-19th century immigration — is reflected in its architecture, cuisine, and most notably its beer culture. The Kunstmann brewery is Chile's most famous craft brewery, and dozens of smaller cervecerías have followed, making Valdivia the undisputed beer capital of Chile. Summer beer gardens and riverside terraces are central to the social experience.

Beyond the city, boat trips navigate the river system to the Spanish colonial forts at Corral and Niebla — 17th-century defensive positions that once guarded the most important Spanish port in the Pacific. The Santuario de la Naturaleza Carlos Anwandter protects the wetlands where the rivers meet, providing extraordinary birdwatching. A rental car extends exploration to coastal beaches, the Huilo-Huilo biological reserve, and the broader Los Ríos region.
