Safety Guide: Puerto Deseado

Petty crime such as pickpocketing is rare in Puerto Deseado, a small and close-knit community. Violent crime is extremely uncommon. The town center and main tourist areas are generally very safe, even at night. However, standard precautions like not leaving valuables unattended should always be observed.

Patagonia is famous for its extreme and rapidly changing weather. Strong winds (often reaching gale force), sudden drops in temperature, and rain are common, even in summer. Hypothermia is a serious risk if not properly dressed or caught unprepared in bad weather. The coastal climate can be harsh.

Puerto Deseado is a wildlife paradise. While spectacular, it's crucial to maintain a respectful distance from all animals, especially sea lions, penguins, and marine birds. Approaching too closely can disturb them, and stressed animals can act defensively. This applies to land excursions and boat tours.

Driving is one of the primary safety concerns in this remote region. Many roads outside of town are gravel (ripio), which can be challenging to navigate, especially at high speeds or after rain. Strong crosswinds can significantly affect vehicle stability. Animal crossings (guanacos, sheep, wild horses) are frequent, particularly at dawn and dusk. Fuel stations are scarce between towns, and breakdowns can leave you stranded for hours without cell service.

Activities like boat tours to observe marine life are popular. Always choose reputable tour operators with good safety records and certified equipment. For hiking in surrounding areas, trails may not be well-marked, and weather can change quickly, increasing the risk of getting lost or succumbing to exposure.

Puerto Deseado has a hospital and medical facilities, but for serious emergencies or complex treatments, evacuation to larger cities like Comodoro Rivadavia may be necessary. Response times can be longer due to the remote nature of the region. Pharmacies are available for basic needs.
