Road Conditions by Season

Summer (Dec - Mar)

From December to March, the road (Ruta 40) is generally in excellent condition, fully paved and clear. Expect heavy traffic, especially on weekends and during the artisan fair days (Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday) in El Bolsón. Occasional road construction may cause minor delays, but detours are well-marked.

Winter (Jun - Sep)

From June to September, the road remains paved, but ice and snow can be present, especially in early morning or shaded sections. While Ruta 40 is usually cleared promptly, carrying snow chains is advisable, and exercising extreme caution is necessary. Fog can also reduce visibility.

Year-round Notes

Throughout the year, be mindful of strong Patagonian winds, particularly in more open sections. Always watch out for wildlife, especially guanacos, hares, and birds, which can cross the road unexpectedly. Check local weather forecasts before departing, particularly outside of summer months.

Vehicle Recommendation

Given the entirely paved and well-maintained Ruta 40, a standard 2WD compact car or sedan is perfectly sufficient for the Bariloche to El Bolsón route. While a 4x4 or SUV offers more comfort and clearance for exploring unpaved side roads (like the road to Lago Puelo), it is not strictly necessary for this main drive.

Essential Driving Tips

  • 1Fill up your fuel tank in Bariloche before you leave, as fuel stops between the two towns are limited.
  • 2Be prepared for changing weather conditions, even in summer. Pack layers and rain gear.
  • 3If traveling on Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday, expect more traffic as these are the main market days in El Bolsón. Arrive early to find parking.
  • 4Keep an eye out for road construction, particularly during the shoulder seasons. Follow speed limits and signage carefully.
  • 5Always drive with headlights on, as required by Argentine law.
  • 6Watch for wildlife, especially around dawn and dusk, as animals can appear suddenly on the road.
  • 7Plan for extra time to stop at viewpoints along Lago Gutiérrez and Lago Mascardi; they offer fantastic photo opportunities.
  • 8Download offline maps or carry a physical map, as cell phone reception can be spotty in certain stretches.
