Verão in Nahuel Huapi National Park
Verão opens up all of Nahuel Huapi Parque Nacional — Argentina's first and most iconic parque nacional. Hike to mountain refugios, drive the famous Circuito Chico, swim in glacial lakes, and explore 710,000 hectares of Andean wilderness de dezembro a fevereiro.
Nahuel Huapi Parque Nacional is Argentina's oldest and most visited parque nacional, established in 1934 and encompassing 710,000 hectares of Andean lakes, forests, glaciers, and peaks surrounding the city of San Carlos de Bariloche. The park's centerpiece is the vast Lago Nahuel Huapi, a glacial lake of extraordinary blue surrounded by snow-capped mountains and dense lenga and coihue forests.
Verão from dezembro a fevereiro is the park's prime season. All caminhada trails are open, mountain refugios welcome trekkers, lakes warm enough for natação, and the iconic scenic drives are at their most beautiful. With temperatures reaching 22-26°C, daylight lasting past 10pm, and the Andes gleaming under clear skies, this is when the park reveals its full grandeur.
The park offers an extraordinary range of experiences. The Refugio Frey circuit is one of Patagonia's classic hikes, reaching a granite amphitheater with a mountain lake. The Circuito Chico scenic drive loops through lakeside forests with stunning viewpoints. Isla Victoria, accessible by boat, features ancient arrayán (myrtle) forests with cinnamon-colored bark. The Tronador glaciar, at the park's western edge, calves dramatically into an emerald lake.
Bariloche sits at the heart of the park, providing excellent infrastructure for visitors — from world-class chocolate shops and craft breweries to mountaineering gear shops and tour agencies. However, the park extends far beyond Bariloche in every direction, and a carro alugado is the key to unlocking its full potential, from the Seven Lakes Route heading north to the wild Paso de los Nubes trek in the south.

Moderate to strong winds are common, particularly on lake surfaces and exposed ridges. Valleys and forests provide shelter. Afternoon winds tend to be strongest.

Exceptionally long days with 16-17 horas de luz do dia, allowing extended hikes and activities well into the evening.
Verão in Nahuel Huapi is warm and generally pleasant at lake level, with cooler conditions at higher elevations. Clear mornings often give way to afternoon cloud buildup. Refugio Frey Trek
One of Patagonia's classic hikes — a 10km trail from the base of Cerro Catedral to a granite amphitheater surrounding Laguna Toncek. Many hikers overnight at the refugio. Verão is the prime season with snow-free trails.
Circuito Chico Scenic Drive
This iconic 60km loop from Bariloche passes through lakeside forests, over Peninsula Llao Llao, and past numerous viewpoints. With a carro alugado, you can stop at beaches, trailheads, and the famous Llao Llao hotel for afternoon tea.
Isla Victoria and Arrayán Forest
A boat excursion from Puerto Pañuelo crosses Lago Nahuel Huapi to Isla Victoria and the Bosque de Arrayanes — a unique forest of cinnamon-barked myrtle trees that allegedly inspired Disney's Bambi.
Cerro Tronador Glacier
Drive to the base of Monte Tronador (3,478m) — the park's highest peak — to see the Ventisquero Negro (Black Glacier) and hear the thunderous ice collapses that give the mountain its name. A full-day excursion.
Lake Swimming and Beaches
Verão warms the smaller lakes and bays enough for natação. Playa Bonita, Bahía Serena, and Lago Gutiérrez are popular spots. The water is refreshing rather than warm.
Seven Lakes Route

Hospedagem
The park benefits from Bariloche's extensive hospedagem infrastructure — from luxury hotels like Llao Llao to backpacker hostels. Within the park, mountain refugios offer basic but atmospheric overnight stays for hikers. Campgrounds are scattered throughout the park. Villa La Angostura on the northern shore provides a quieter alternative base. Verão is alta temporada — book well ahead for January, especially refugios.
Lotacao e Turismo
January is the busiest month, with both international and domestic Argentine tourists. The Circuito Chico, Cerro Catedral base, and boat excursion to Isla Victoria see the heaviest traffic. For quieter experiences, start hikes early, visit less-known trails, or explore the park's southern and western sectors. December and February are slightly calmer.
Precos
As Patagonia's most popular park, prices reflect demand. Bariloche hospedagem and dining are moderate to expensive in verão. Park entrance fees are reasonable. Boat excursions, guided treks, and car rentals are the main expenses. Budget $100-200 USD per day for comfortable mid-range travel.
Condicoes de Estrada
Importante para viajantes com carro alugado
Roads within the park are excellent. Circuito Chico is fully paved. The Seven Lakes Route is paved. The road to Tronador involves a mix of paved and well-maintained gravel. A standard carro alugado handles all main park routes. For some secondary trails and forest roads, higher clearance is useful. Renting a car in Bariloche is highly recommended and gives access to the park's full extent, far beyond what organized tours cover.

Perguntas Frequentes
How many days do I need for Nahuel Huapi Parque Nacional?
A minimum of 3-4 days covers the highlights: one day for Circuito Chico, one for a major hike like Refugio Frey, and one for Cerro Tronador or the boat to Isla Victoria. A week or more allows deeper exploration including the Seven Lakes Route, multiple hikes, and hidden beaches.
Do I need a car to explore the park?
While organized tours cover the main attractions, a carro alugado vastly improves the experience. It allows you to do Circuito Chico at your own pace, access trailheads early (crucial for avoiding crowds), drive the Seven Lakes Route, and discover quiet corners of the park that tours don't reach.
Is Refugio Frey difficult?
The hike is moderate to challenging — about 10km each way with approximately 800m of elevation gain. It takes 3-4 hours up. The trail is well-marked but steep in sections. Many hikers camp or stay at the refugio overnight rather than doing it as a round trip in one day.
Can I swim in Lago Nahuel Huapi?
Yes, though the large lake remains cold (12-16°C) even in verão. Smaller lakes like Lago Gutiérrez and sheltered bays warm more. Popular natação spots include Playa Bonita and Bahía Serena. Most people enjoy brief refreshing dips rather than extended natação.
What is the Seven Lakes Route?
The Ruta de los Siete Lagos (Seven Lakes Route) is a 110km scenic drive from Bariloche to San Martín de los Andes, passing seven lakes of different colors and sizes. The fully estrada pavimentada offers numerous viewpoints and trailheads. It's one of Argentina's most beautiful drives and takes a full day if you stop frequently.
