Puerto Deseado, perched on the banks of the Ría Deseado estuary in Santa Cruz province, is one of Patagonia's hidden treasures and a frontier destination for adventurous car campers. Unlike the more famous wildlife sites to the north, Puerto Deseado remains gloriously off the beaten path, offering intimate encounters with Commerson's dolphins, rockhopper penguins, Magellanic penguins, and vast cormorant colonies without the crowds. The town sits where the Deseado River meets the Atlantic, creating a unique estuarine ecosystem. For car campers, the journey here is part of the adventure — long stretches of empty steppe, occasional guanaco herds, and the sense of reaching somewhere truly remote. Camping options are basic but the wildlife experiences are world-class and practically private.
