Gobernador Gregores is a small town in the heart of Santa Cruz province that might not appear on most tourist radars, but for car campers on Ruta 40, it's a crucial oasis. Located roughly midway between El Calafate and Perito Moreno town on the legendary highway, this settlement of around 6,000 people provides fuel, food, and a chance to rest in a region where the next town can be half a day's drive away. The surrounding landscape is quintessential Patagonian steppe — vast, windswept, and hauntingly beautiful in its emptiness. Camping here is about the road trip experience rather than specific attractions, though the nearby Lago Cardiel and access to the Perito Moreno National Park (different from the glacier) provide worthwhile side trips for those with time.

Perguntas Frequentes

Is there anything to see here?

The town itself is utilitarian, but Lago Cardiel (60 km south) is stunningly beautiful — a vast turquoise lake in the brown steppe. The access to Parque Nacional Perito Moreno (not the glacier) is also via Gregores.

How important is the fuel stop here?

Critical. This is one of the few reliable fuel stations on the remote central Ruta 40. Never pass through without filling your tank completely.

Can I camp at Lago Cardiel?

Yes, informal free camping is practiced along the lakeshore. It's wild, exposed, and beautiful. Bring everything you need including water — there are zero facilities.

What about Parque Nacional Perito Moreno?

This remote national park (120 km west, mostly gravel road) offers spectacular mountain and lake scenery with almost no visitors. Basic free camping is available inside. 4x4 recommended.

How windy is it really?

Gobernador Gregores regularly experiences sustained winds of 60-80 km/h. The municipal campground's trees and shelters make a huge difference compared to exposed steppe camping.
