Patagonia's Lake District is a fly fishing paradise, home to crystal-clear rivers teeming with rainbow trout, brown trout, and landlocked Atlantic salmon. This 7-day road trip takes you through the heart of Argentina's premier fishing region, from the renowned waters around Junín de los Andes — the self-proclaimed trout capital of the world — to the picturesque lakes surrounding Bariloche. Each day brings new rivers to wade and new mountain scenery to admire.

Having your own rental car is essential for reaching the best fishing spots, many of which are located down dirt roads far from public transport routes. The driving is relaxed on well-maintained paved roads between towns, with short detours to access rivers and lakeshores. Whether you are a seasoned angler or a curious beginner looking to try your first cast in world-famous waters, this itinerary offers the perfect balance of fishing, exploration, and Patagonian hospitality.

45 km (from CPC airport)
45 minutes

Fly into San Martín de los Andes airport (CPC) or Neuquén (NQN) and pick up your rental car. Drive to Junín de los Andes, the undisputed fly fishing capital of Argentina. Check into a fishing lodge or hotel and spend the afternoon getting your fishing permits and stocking up on gear at one of the excellent local fly shops. If time permits, take a short evening session on the lower Chimehuin River, just minutes from town, where large rainbow and brown trout rise to dry flies in the fading light.

Chimehuin & Aluminé Rivers

80 km (round trip to Aluminé area)
1.5 hours

Dedicate a full day to fishing the world-famous waters around Junín. The Chimehuin River is legendary for its large rainbow trout, with fish regularly exceeding 50 cm. In the morning, wade the productive pools near the town bridge or drive upstream to the Boca Chimehuin where it meets Lago Huechulafquen. In the afternoon, drive north to the Aluminé River, which offers faster water and excellent nymphing opportunities. Lago Huechulafquen & Drive to San Martín

60 km
1 hour

Start the morning with a session on Lago Huechulafquen, a large volcanic lake at the foot of Lanín Volcano. Trolling or casting from shore near the river mouths can produce impressive lake-run brown trout. After lunch, drive south along the scenic Ruta 234 to San Martín de los Andes, a charming alpine town on the shores of Lago Lácar. The drive itself is gorgeous, winding through Lanín National Park with views of snow-capped peaks. Arrive in San Martín, check into your accommodation, and explore the town's excellent restaurants and craft beer scene.

1.5 hours

Spend the day exploring the fishing opportunities around San Martín de los Andes. Drive along the northern shore of Lago Lácar to the Hua Hum River, which connects Lago Lácar to Lago Nonthué near the Chilean border. This beautiful spring creek-style river is ideal for sight fishing to selective trout in clear water using small dry flies and nymphs. The setting, surrounded by ancient coihue forests and snow-capped Andes, is spectacular. In the afternoon, try the outlet of Lago Lácar near town or explore Lago Lolog to the north for shore-based fishing.

Questions Fréquentes

Do I need a fishing guide for this trip?

While not strictly necessary for experienced anglers, hiring a local guide for at least 1-2 days is highly recommended. Guides provide access to private waters, know the best techniques for current conditions, and ensure you have the right flies and presentations.

What fishing permits do I need?

You need provincial fishing permits for Neuquén (Junín and San Martín areas) and Río Negro (Bariloche area). Weekly permits cost around $50-$80 USD and can be purchased at tourist offices or fly shops in each town.

What is the catch-and-release policy?

Most premium rivers in the Lake District are catch-and-release only. Always use barbless hooks and rubber mesh nets. Some lakes allow limited harvest — check local regulations carefully.

Can beginners enjoy this trip?

Absolutely. The trip is rated easy in terms of physical difficulty. Beginners should hire a guide who will provide equipment, instruction, and access to productive beginner-friendly waters.

What type of car do I need?

A compact SUV from PatagoniaHub is perfect. The main roads are paved, but many fishing access points require short drives on gravel roads. Higher ground clearance gives peace of mind on these side roads.

Is the Seven Lakes Route paved?

Yes, the Seven Lakes Route (Ruta 40 between San Martín de los Andes and Villa La Angostura) is fully paved. It is one of the most scenic paved drives in all of Patagonia.
