Puerto Montt, the capital of Chile's Los Lagos region, is the transportation hub where the Pan-American Highway ends and the adventure south begins. For car campers, this bustling port city is a critical staging point: it's where you board ferries to Chiloé, begin the legendary Carretera Austral, or explore the surrounding fjords and rainforests. While the city itself isn't a camping destination, the surrounding area — Alerce Andino National Park, the Reloncaví Fjord, and the coastal villages — offers excellent camping in lush temperate rainforest. The famous Angelmó fish market provides the ultimate camp dinner provisions: fresh seafood at great prices.
