Most established campgrounds are accessible with a 2WD vehicle. However, a 4x4 is recommended for reaching remote free camping spots along unpaved roads, especially after rain.

How windy does it get when camping in El Calafate?

Patagonian winds regularly reach 60-80 km/h and gusts can exceed 100 km/h. Use a wind-rated tent, stake it thoroughly with heavy-duty stakes, and park your car as a windbreak.

Is there cell phone service at campgrounds?

Cell service works in El Calafate town but is very limited or nonexistent at campgrounds inside Los Glaciares National Park. Download offline maps before heading out.

Can I camp year-round in El Calafate?

Some campgrounds close from April to October. Winter camping is possible but requires specialized cold-weather gear, as temperatures drop to -15°C. Roads may have ice and snow.
