Otoño in Los Antiguos

Los Antiguos sits on the southern shore of Lago Buenos Aires (Lago General Carrera on the Chilean side), enjoying a remarkably mild microclimate that has earned it the nickname "Garden of Patagonia." Sheltered from the worst Patagonian winds by surrounding hills, this small town of unas 3,500 inhabitants is famous for producing cherries, strawberries, and other fruits that seem impossible in this latitude.

Autumn, from marzo through mayo, captures the town at a lovely transition point. Early marzo still sees the tail end of the fruit season, with roadside stands selling fresh cherries, preserves, and homemade jams. The orchards and farms that surround the town are set against a backdrop of lombardy poplars that turn brilliant gold en otoño, creating a warm contrast with the turquoise waters of the immense lake beyond.

Los Antiguos marks the end (or beginning) of legendary Ruta 40 for many travelers, and it serves as the Argentine gateway to Chile Chico across the border. The cruce fronterizo is straightforward and the two towns, just 8 kilometers apart, offer complementary experiences — Los Antiguos with its Argentine gaucho culture and Chile Chico with its Chilean frontier spirit.

marzo is the most active month, with warm temperatures, operating farms, and the energy of the recent cherry festival. abril brings beautiful foliage and a more contemplative mood. By mayo, the town settles into its quiet winter rhythms, though the scenery — vast lake, colored mountains, and open sky — remains as compelling as ever.

The town's sunny microclimate means otoño here is often clearer and drier than destinations further west along the Carretera Austral, making it a pleasant base for exploring both sides of the border.
