Otoño in Lago General Carrera

Lago General Carrera (known as Lago Buenos Aires on the Argentine side) is South America's largest lake by surface area, straddling the Chile-Argentina border in a dramatic landscape of mountains, glaciers, and volcanic terrain. En otoño, from marzo through mayo, the lake and its surroundings offer some of Patagonia's most spectacular scenery.

The lake is famous for its extraordinary turquoise color, caused by glacial flour suspended in the water. This vivid hue persists todo el año, but en otoño it gains a new dimension when framed by the golden and crimson foliage of surrounding forests. The contrast of turquoise water, colores otoñales, and snow-dusted Andes creates landscapes that seem almost impossibly beautiful.

The Carretera Austral follows the lake's western shore, passing through several small towns that serve as bases for exploration. Puerto Río Tranquilo, aproximadamente midway along the shore, is the departure point for boat trips to the famous Marble Caves (Capillas de Mármol) — a network of water-carved marble formations in the lake. Otoño boat trips operate with grupos más pequeños, and calm morning conditions often allow kayak access to caves that are too rough to enter in windier summer months.

marzo offers the most reliable weather, with pleasant temperatures and many services still operating from the summer season. abril brings peak follaje otoñal, especially along the western lakeshore where the temperate forest meets the steppe. By mayo, the area grows quiet as services reduce, but the dramatic landscape remains accessible for self-sufficient travelers.

The lake's immense size — 1,850 square kilometers — creates its own weather patterns, with conditions that can change rapidly. This adds drama to the scenery but also demands respect from travelers exploring its shores.
