Many standard rental car insurance policies, including those from credit cards or basic travel insurance, specifically exclude damage incurred on unpaved or 'off-road' surfaces (ripio). Given the prevalence of gravel roads in the region, you must confirm your policy or an additional rental car excess waiver covers such damage. Without it, you could be fully liable for repairs.

Given the potential for high costs associated with medical treatment and emergency evacuation in a foreign country, especially from remote areas, it's recommended to have at least $100,000 - $250,000 in emergency medical coverage. For emergency evacuation, aim for $250,000 or more, to cover potential helicopter rescue and transport to a major hospital.
