Autumn in Lago Puelo

Lago Puelo, both a small town and a national park in the Comarca Andina region of Chubut Province, Argentina, offers one of the Lake District's most intimate autumn experiences. Located just 20 kilometers from the better-known El Bolsón, the area centers around a pristine lake of remarkable clarity, surrounded by Valdivian temperate rainforest.

Autumn, from March through May, is arguably the park's most photogenic season. The diverse forest canopy — a mix of coigüe, lenga, ñire, radal, and native cypresses — creates a rich tapestry of color. The deciduous species turn brilliant shades of crimson, copper, and gold while the evergreens provide deep green contrast. The crystal-clear lake reflects these colors perfectly on calm mornings, creating mirror-image landscapes.

Lago Puelo National Park protects one of the warmest and lowest-elevation areas in the Argentine Andes, giving it a unique microclimate that supports tree species found nowhere else in the country. This Valdivian forest influence means the autumn foliage includes species not seen in parks further south, adding botanical diversity to the visual display.

The nearby town of El Bolsón, famous for its organic farmers' market, artisan community, and craft beer scene, provides a cultural complement to the park's natural beauty. The market operates year-round (Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays), and autumn's cooler weather makes it a perfect time to browse handmade goods while sipping local craft beer.

March is warm and inviting, with swimming still possible in the lake. April brings the height of the color display. May sees the first frosts and a quieter pace, with many visitors choosing the cozy atmosphere of El Bolsón's cafes and breweries over the cooler outdoor conditions.
