Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Puerto Madryn & Car Pick-up

70 km
1 hour

Your Patagonian wildlife adventure begins with your arrival at El Tehuelche Airport (REL) in Trelew. Here, you'll pick up your pre-booked rental car, which will be your trusty companion for the next five days. The drive from Trelew to Puerto Madryn is a straightforward 70-kilometer journey along Ruta Nacional 3, taking approximately one hour. Once you've checked into your accommodation in Puerto Madryn, take some time to settle in and explore this vibrant coastal city. Puerto Madryn serves as the gateway to Península Valdés and offers a variety of dining options, souvenir shops, and a pleasant waterfront promenade. Consider a leisurely stroll along the beach or a visit to the Ecocentro, a natural history museum with stunning views of Golfo Nuevo, to set the tone for your wildlife encounters.

Day 2

Península Valdés North Loop: Whales, Sea Lions & Orcas

Approx. 345 km
6-7 hours (includes driving within the reserve)

Today is dedicated to exploring the northern loop of Península Valdés. Depart Puerto Madryn early, driving 77 km north on Ruta Provincial 2 to the reserve entrance, where you'll pay the entrance fee. Your first stop is Puerto Pirámides, the only town within the peninsula and the primary hub for whale watching tours (seasonal: June-December). Embark on a boat trip into Golfo Nuevo to witness the incredible southern right whales up close. After your whale watching experience, head north on the gravel Ruta Provincial 49 towards Punta Norte (approx. 75 km). This is a prime spot for viewing large colonies of sea lions and elephant seals. During March and April, it's also one of the few places in the world where orcas are known to intentionally beach themselves to hunt sea lion pups. Continue south on Ruta Provincial 3 to Caleta Valdés (approx. 80 km), a long, narrow inlet where you can observe more elephant seals and, seasonally, Magellanic penguins. Return to Puerto Madryn in the late afternoon, enjoying the vast Patagonian landscapes.

Day 3

Península Valdés South Loop & Coastal Wonders

Approx. 380 km
6-7 hours (includes driving within the reserve)

Your second full day inside Península Valdés focuses on its southern reaches and other significant wildlife spots. Depart Puerto Madryn and head directly towards Caleta Valdés again, but this time, continue further south along Ruta Provincial 3 (gravel) to Punta Delgada (approx. 70 km from Caleta Valdés). Punta Delgada is home to an important elephant seal colony, easily viewable from high cliffs. At Punta Delgada, you can also visit the historic lighthouse and enjoy the rugged coastal scenery. If you missed a specific wildlife viewing opportunity on Day 2 or wish for a different perspective, you might consider a revisit to Puerto Pirámides for a second whale watching tour, or simply to enjoy the beach and relax. Spend the afternoon soaking in the raw beauty of the Patagonian coastline and observing different bird species, before making your way back to Puerto Madryn in the evening. Keep an eye out for guanacos, choiques (rheas), and armadillos that roam freely across the peninsula.

Overnight: Puerto Madryn💡 Fuel is critical. The only reliable gas station inside the peninsula is in Puerto Pirámides, but it can be more expensive or have limited hours. Always fill up in Puerto Madryn before entering the reserve, and carry a spare tire and repair kit for the gravel roads.
Day 4

Punta Tombo Penguin Colony Excursion

Approx. 360 km
4-5 hours (plus time at the reserve)

Today, take a fascinating day trip south of Puerto Madryn to the world-renowned Punta Tombo Provincial Reserve, home to the largest continental Magellanic penguin colony. The drive from Puerto Madryn is approximately 180 km each way, taking around 2 hours on paved and some gravel roads (Ruta Provincial 1). Arrive at Punta Tombo and walk along designated boardwalks that weave through thousands of nesting penguins, offering incredibly close-up views of these charming birds in their natural habitat. Spend several hours observing the penguins as they waddle to and from the sea, tend to their chicks (seasonal), and interact with each other. This is a truly immersive wildlife experience. There's a visitor center and facilities at Punta Tombo. After your visit, begin the scenic drive back to Puerto Madryn. Alternatively, if Punta Tombo is not in season (penguins are typically present from September to March), consider a visit to the Welsh town of Gaiman for a traditional Welsh tea, or enjoy a more relaxed day exploring other attractions around Puerto Madryn.

Departure from Puerto Madryn

70 km
1 hour

On your final day, enjoy a relaxed breakfast in Puerto Madryn. Depending on your flight schedule, you might have time for some last-minute souvenir shopping, a final stroll along the beach, or a visit to a local cafe. If you have an afternoon or evening flight, consider visiting the Museo Provincial de Ciencias Naturales y Oceanográficas in Puerto Madryn for a deeper understanding of the region's natural history. When it's time to depart, drive your rental car back to El Tehuelche Airport (REL) in Trelew, approximately 70 km away. Allow ample time for the drive, car return procedures, and airport check-in. As you leave, you'll carry with you unforgettable memories of Patagonia's incredible marine wildlife and the freedom of exploring this unique corner of the world on your own terms.
