Valle Lunar (Moon Valley)
natureA surreal landscape of eroded rock formations in bands of red, cream, orange, and grey, shaped by millennia of wind and water. The valley feels like walking on another planet. Several informal trails allow you to explore among the formations. Early morning and late afternoon light transforms the colors dramatically.
Piedra Clavada (Balanced Rock)
natureA striking geological formation where a massive boulder sits impossibly balanced atop a narrow pedestal of eroded stone. This natural monument, visible from the access road, is one of the reserve's most photographed features and a testament to the extraordinary erosion processes that shaped this landscape.
Ancient Rock Art Sites
cultureSeveral caves and overhangs within the reserve contain rock paintings left by the Tehuelche people and their predecessors, dating back thousands of years. The paintings depict hands, guanacos, and geometric patterns in red and black pigments. CONAF rangers can direct you to accessible sites.
Guanaco and Wildlife Watching
wildlifeThe reserve supports healthy herds of guanacos, the wild ancestors of the llama, grazing on the steppe and valley floors. Andean condors are frequently spotted soaring above the cliffs, and lesser rheas (choiques) run across the plains. Pumas are present but extremely elusive.
Laguna Jeinimeni and Laguna Verde
natureTwo stunningly colored lakes nestled in the valleys of the reserve. Laguna Jeinimeni reflects the surrounding painted hills, while Laguna Verde lives up to its name with intensely green-tinted water caused by mineral deposits. Both are accessible by vehicle on rough tracks and make excellent picnic spots.
Chile Chico and Eastern Lake Shore
cultureThe gateway town of Chile Chico enjoys a unique microclimate that is warmer and drier than anywhere else on the Carretera Austral. Cherry orchards, vineyards, and a Mediterranean feel contrast sharply with the wild Patagonian landscape. The drive along the eastern shore of Lago General Carrera between Chile Chico and Puerto Guadal is spectacularly scenic.
Cerro Pico Sur Trek
adventureFor fit hikers, the trail to Cerro Pico Sur offers a challenging climb with extraordinary panoramic views of the reserve, Lago General Carrera, and the Andes on the horizon. The trail is steep and poorly marked, so local guidance is recommended. Allow a full day for the round trip.
