Tolhuin, a small town at the eastern end of Lago Fagnano (Lago Khami) in Argentine Tierra del Fuego, is affectionately known as the 'heart of the island' for its central location between Ushuaia and Río Grande. For car campers, Tolhuin offers a peaceful alternative to the busier destinations at either end of the island. The massive Lago Fagnano — the largest lake in Tierra del Fuego, spanning both Argentina and Chile — provides a stunning backdrop with its dark waters reflecting the surrounding lenga and ñire forests. The town is famous for its Panadería La Unión, a bakery that's become a pilgrimage stop for every traveler crossing the island. Campgrounds along the lake offer a serene base for exploring the Fuegian forests, fishing for trout, and experiencing the island's quiet interior.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's special about the bakery?

Panadería La Unión is a legendary Tierra del Fuego institution. Every traveler stops for their fresh bread, medialunas (croissants), and facturas. It's open from early morning — stock up for your camping breakfast.

Is Lago Fagnano good for fishing?

Excellent. The lake has large brown and rainbow trout, and sea-run brook trout. A Tierra del Fuego fishing license is required. Local guides offer trips.

Can I see beavers?

Yes, beaver dams and lodges are visible along many streams. These invasive animals (introduced in 1946) have dramatically altered the landscape. Dawn and dusk are best for sightings.

How cold is it in summer?

Summer highs are 12-18°C with nights dropping to 2-5°C. Wind chill makes it feel colder. Warm sleeping gear is essential even in January.

Is Tolhuin a good stop between Ushuaia and Río Grande?

Perfect. It breaks the 200 km drive into two equal halves, offers camping, food, and fuel, and the lake scenery makes it worth more than a quick stop.
